THE LANGUAGE WE ALL UNDERSTAND !!

A child’s first ability to understand something of the world around him/her is the mother language. The learning of concepts, skills and perception of existence starts with the mother language which is first taught to a child. Mother language plays an important role in framing our thinking, emotions and spiritual world because the most important stage of our life (childhood) is spent in its imprints.

’’Mother language’’ is the language that a person learns from his infancy. A child expresses his feelings, happiness, sadness, fears and first words through his/her Mother Language. Our personality, character, shyness and all the other hidden characteristics are truly revealed through the Mother Language. Mother Language provides a basis for understanding and learning other languages. Mother language gives us trust and confidence which makes us achieve many goals in future.

International Mother Language day is celebrated on 21st February. Since 2000, UNESCO has been celebrating international mother language day on February 21st every year. It is celebrated to remind us of the importance of Mother Language as a cultural asset. According to UNESCO, a language is lost every two weeks and this date was chosen randomly though.

My mother language is Telugu. Here are a few Telugu words which are similar to other Indian Languages.

  • The Telugu word ‘అభివృద్ధి’ and Kannada word ‘ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ’ means development in both the languages.
  • The Telugu word ‘వసంత’ and the Tamil word ‘வசந்த’ means spring season in both the languages.
  • The Telugu word ‘శాంతి’ and the Hindi word ‘शांति’means peace in both languages.
  • The Telugu word ‘సంస్కృతి’ and the Bengali word ‘সংস্কৃতি’ means culture in both the languages.

The pronunciation of these words in both languages is the same.

Spending some time to read and understand the depth of our mother tongue would astonish us with its richness of the literature and vocabulary. As the word itself says, “mother tongue'', this should be close to our heart and never ignored. In the buzz of catching up with the international standards, we tend to put aside the mother tongue and try to pick up English and gain fluency in it. As learning another language is an appreciated skill, what needs to be taken care of in parallel is that our mother tongue is the very essence that runs in our blood and makes our self. It deserves to be appreciated and respected, no individual should be ashamed to speak their language amidst a crowd.
