There is a Hidden Scientist in every Child !!

img

Science is not just about knowing things; science is the way of thinking.. its is about how you look at the world.

Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Science was the first subject humans ever knowing. Studying science develops a wide set of transferable skills. You will learn to approach problems in an organised way.

And work on creative ways to solve them. You learn how to be open minded on new alternative ideas and how to have the courage to change your mind and try again. Science develops critical thinking among learners by encouraging them to review their work for further improvement.

Children are naturally curious. School is the best place to nurture their curiosity. Be it a quiz, a classroom activity, an experiment, or concepts in science, it is our endeavour to bring students to the world of science. The school has been providing various opportunities for students to have fun and at the same time acquire, achieve and contribute to science. So undoubtedly, we can say our school, our classrooms are blooming research stations.

HOMEWORK…

“It’s My Self- Exploration Time”

“Why, oh why do I need to sit and write again? It is only I who has to complete the task of doing my home assignment every day”, rued Ricky. Jude, his mother smiled patiently at him and asked, “When did you go out for playing today?” Ricky replied askingly, “At around 4:30 p.m. Why do you ask?” Jude showed him the clock in his room. It showed 7:30 pm “So, dear, you’ve had your relaxation for more than three hours.” Jude replied.

This was the usual scenario in the Webster family every evening when Ricky would finally sit down for his ‘dreaded’ homework.

Jude had received a mail from Ricky’s school recently explaining the purpose of assigning self-study assignments and how parents can help their children spend time constructively at home.

Jude decided to apply it to her son. After Ricky had completed his assignments for the day, the family sat down to enjoy their dinner time together. It was a rule in their family not to switch on the television or use mobiles during dinner time. It was family time to converse, exchange their days’ happenings with each other. All of them looked forward to this time to unwind.

Jude asked Ricky which of his friends had attended school offline that day. His friend, Richard had come to school for the first time after the pandemic had started. Ricky was full of stories about his school time. Jude asked him what he had been taught that day. Ricky started recollecting from the first period onwards. That was how he always did.

Jude wasn’t clear about one of the concepts in Science that Ricky had explained to her last evening. She asked Ricky to clarify it to her after dinner, but Ricky could not recall it completely. Dissatisfied with his own explanation, he decided to refer the notes and textbook and then explained it to his mother. A while later, his mother had another doubt in Geography. Ricky and his mother explored the net and encyclopedia to clarify the concept. It was fun and seemed such an interesting activity!

The next morning, the Webster family was exercising together, again an integral part of their family. Ricky’ s father asked him what he would call the way he had referred to his books and net last evening to clarify her doubts. She explained that this was “Self-Study” as he had himself searched for the information, referred books, net to understand the concept. This caught Ricky’s attention. Jude wondered aloud if both she and Ricky could spend time that evening planning a routine for him. To Jude’s delight, Ricky readily agreed. In fact, he was looking forward to it - Making a routine for himself! How interesting to be a master of your own time!

He remembered being guided in the school about balanced routine but had hardly given it a though till date. Ricky kept the paper on “Beyond Homework” given by his school ready before leaving for his school.

That evening, the mother- son duo sat down to divide his evening time in half an hour slot and plan his routine. So, they started from 4. 30 p.m. onwards as Ricky reached home after 4.15 p.m.

4.30 - 5.00 p.m. Freshen up and snacks

5.00 - 5.30 .pm. Playing.

5.30 - 6.00 p.m. Playing

6.00 - 6.30 p.m. And, now Ricky stopped.

Jude looked askingly at her son. “What do you want to do in this slot?” Ricky looked back at her. He, suddenly, realized he was spending most of his time playing, leaving very little room for his self-study, and exploring, learning on his own. How enjoyable this experience had been last evening! Ricky’s decided to curtail his playtime in order to complete reading what he had been taught that day at school before he went to play. Jude found it so magical! So, this is what was planning Self- study time, as had been suggested by the school.

Ricky referred to the “Beyond Homework” sheet and as suggested, decided to play until 6.00 p. m. and then, return home for his evening schedule. It was Ricky’s decision to complete his home assignments on returning from play. He realized he was left with a lot of free time still. He decided to read what he had been taught that day at school, and also utilize half an hour everyday referring the net or his encyclopedia for additional information on the concepts he was studying at school currently, so he could contribute to the class. This suddenly seemed such an interesting prospect! It motivated him to start innovating something new so he could be a part of the “New Innovation Club” at his school.

He started looking forward to his evening time at home with his routine in place. The “Home-Work” did not seem dreadful to him anymore as it had become “My Self-Study”, “My Self-Exploration” time instead of just “Homework” time and one that helped him to understand the concepts better and minimized his forgetting. A fortnight later, he felt so confident after putting his routine into practice. His teachers and classmates were amazed to see this confident Ricky. Everyone was appreciative on coming to know of his routine. Quite a few of his classmates also planned out their evening schedule.

It no longer remained Ricky’s “Self- Study” or “My Self- Exploration” time, as he liked to call it, but most of his class mates started following it. Ricky’s mother, on her part, was a satisfied person as she could put the guidelines sent by the school into practice. She decided to be a regular follower of any such guidance that came from her son’s school. After all, it was meant to help parents like them to make school life a joyful journey for their children.

I believe in the adage “you just don't teach, you inspire." It's been a roller-coaster ride for me to pick teaching as a career and not opting for careers in MNCs, MBA and other lucrative fields in spite of seeing my brother working in front of the system and his screen going blue and green all the time sitting at one place working for hours and hours. I felt it was not my cup of tea, as I always wanted to do something different, something unique !!

I have always been fascinated by teaching . I did my post-graduation diploma in pre-primary teacher training and child psychology. I have always been inspired by the educational teaching values I learnt from my school and college.

I'm so delighted to work in the same school where I had once been a student. As a teacher I am discovering a lot more things in-depth. I have learnt class management and adopted a unique way of teaching the children. Involvement and experience is the best way to learn something new. The children can learn concepts by doing different activities/experiments in the school and at their home. Instead of learning the concept from the blackboard, and within the four walls of the classroom, a child can learn by doing it in different ways. When children learn any concept from the blackboard, there are more possibilities of forgetting the concepts within a few days.

My journey of exploring new methodologies continues as I understand the fact that a teacher is a learner first !!
