Newsmakers of 2021

This year’s Olympic games were the best ever for India. The athletes of this year have made our country proud. India capped off its best ever performance in the Olympics with 7 medals, including a gold.

Our medallists who made it to the podium in the Olympics 2020 are :

1. Bajrang Punia

Bajrang Punia from Jhajjar in the Indian territory of Haryana won the Bronze decoration in the men's free-form 65kg classification, overcoming Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan. Punia, made up for himself by winning India's 6th decoration of Tokyo 2020 with a persuading 8-0 triumph in the bronze award fight. Tokyo Olympics 2020 was Bajrang Punia's first Olympic Games.

2. Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra won a noteworthy gold award in the men's lance toss, guaranteeing India's best-ever Olympic mission at the Tokyo 2020. By winning a medal in Javelin throw, Chopra became the first track and field athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Olympics.

3. Mirabai Chanu

On August 5,2021, Mirabai Chanu, 26, from Imphal in Manipur turned into India's first silver medalist in the women’ 49 kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Chanu picked a total of 87 kg in the snatch part of the event and ended with a lift of 115 kg in clean and jerk.

Harnaaz Sandhu

Winner of Miss Universe For The Year 2021

Harnaaz was crowned Miss Universe 2021 when she beat Paraguay's Nadia Ferreira and South Africa's Lalela Mswane. Only two Indians have won the title of Miss Universe before Harnaaz Sandhu - actors Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.A model and actor by profession, Harnaaz advocates for women's empowerment, particularly their constitutional rights to education, careers, and their freedom of choice.
